 The internet at its most fundamental is a global network of computers, platforms and infrastructures that comprise the systems people use to communicate and share information. The internet has both advanced and transformed everyday life for many individuals, providing opportunities for education, entertainment, employment, social interaction, shopping and more. The development of the internet has had a significant impact on the modern world.


“The Internet, a world-wide network of computers…is transforming business, government and society at large…or "cyber culture" - as author Larry Downes calls it - is weaving its way into our lives in myriad ways” (Downes, 2011). The internet is not only changing how people live but also how they interact with one another. According to Varnelis and Hirsch, “the internet has created space for a new discourse and practice of citizenship” (2012). They argue that the idea of “netizenship” challenges conventional notions of nationalism by expanding citizenship beyond physical borders.


A critical aspect of the internet is its openness and its lack of central control. The open nature of the internet allows for a multitude of users to access information, especially in regards to political issues. By providing information and opportunities for people, the internet has become a powerful tool when it comes to political change due to the fact that it is decentralized.


The internet can also be a source of contention as many feel that it has not had enough influence on society yet. With over one billion people having access to the internet, there are still many that do not feel included or have been cut out from what they take as their data.
