Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence has been around since the 1950s with computers, so it's taken a long time for it to be of interest to the general public. But recently, A.I. has become more prominent in various fields such as healthcare and business, where it is providing new solutions and saving lives by acting as an assistant. Artificial intelligence is being used in various ways these days like to help guide money managers contribute funds, coordinate emergency responses through natural language processing and computer vision technologies, create music and recommendations on content that users watch or listen to online, or provide detailed answers about a video game that someone just started playing.
"Artificial intelligence" is just a buzzword for a fairly broad range of technologies that involve computer applications that imitate human thinking. At its core artificial intelligence involves software that could perform in a way similar to "the brain." Basically, artificial intelligence involves using software or hardware to replicate how brains function by learning, adapting, and deriving meaning from data. Artificial intelligence can involve processing complex representations of data or it can involve solving problems without referring back to human input. It can be thought of as human-machine interaction in which the computer acts much like the human counterpart.
In healthcare artificial intelligence is being used to automate tasks and make decisions based on information gathered such as previous patient history and medical conditions. It is also involved in pattern recognition like determining the likelihood of a certain diagnosis based on the symptoms a patient describes to a doctor. Another example of artificial intelligence in healthcare is physical therapists using wearable devices to search for specific exercises that treat patients' injuries. The physical therapists can then offer tailored exercises, improving their patient training and reducing back and forth between the doctor's office and physical therapy center.
In business artificial intelligence or A.I. is being used to develop software programs to learn as they go along by using large amounts of data, which can be applied to how these programs function in real life settings and make decisions based on the data collected about previous users' actions within an application. Assembling these applications with A.I. will make it easier for these programs to learn, adapt to changes and make decisions against new sets of data.
In healthcare artificial intelligence has the potential to become a system used to read medical records and provide diagnoses on a patient under supervision of an expert. This can help reduce the amount of time doctors spend on paperwork, decrease medical errors, and improve treatment plans. A related technology called cognitive computing is already being used by health insurers who use it to make decisions about people's coverage and even personalize their recommendations based on the person's age, sex, or family history. With this type of artificial intelligence applications in education are also playing a role in making decisions based on previous student performance.
